On or before May 31, 2019, Massachusetts employers and covered businesses are required to provide written notice to their current workforce of Paid Family and Medical Leave (“PFML”) benefits, contribution rates, and other provisions as outlined in Section 4 of Chapter 175M of the General Laws. On July 1, 2019, employers and covered businesses must begin to make payroll deductions to fund the public trust that eventually will pay out benefits. Although workers are not permitted to access PFML benefits until January 1, 2021, there are steps employers should take now to ensure timely compliance, and a variety of issues to consider before these benefits become available.
